Happy Valley was first published in 2012 in time for the 2013 academic year, 12 years ago.

In that time it has been a long-time best-seller on sale in 70 countries and voted by children in Japan as more popular than Thomas and Friends!

Happy Valley has helped hundreds of thousands of very young learners learn English.

We’re so proud of Happy Valley and incredibly grateful to all of our users all over the world across all these years.

In this series of short newsletters over 12 weeks, we would like to remind you why we think Happy Valley is great, and why so many of you seem to agree.

Following are comments and quotes from teachers who use Happy Valley, and the reasoning that went into what they noticed.

Following on from last week’s message about phonics, here’s a little bit more about real English and really easy reading.

As we mentioned, we teach only lowercase graphemes and matching phonemes. Uppercase we use in context where relevant, such as for proper nouns and at the beginning of a sentence.

Happy Valley flashcards never use uppercase unless necessary.

For example, Kinka has uppercase because it’s a name.

But flower does not have a capital letter because it’s not a proper noun.

Often you will see this:

Flower or FLOWER

It’s difficult to say these are wrong, but it’s easy to say they are not commonly used – over 95% of written English is lowercase.

So we always use this:

flower

前回のフォニックスに関するメッセージに続いて、今回は「本物の英語」と「とても簡単なリーディング」について少しお話しします。

私たちは、小文字のグラフェムと、それに対応するフォニームのみを教えています。大文字は、適切な場面（固有名詞や文の最初など）で使用します。

ハッピーバレーのフラッシュカードでは、必要でない限り大文字は使用しません。

例えば、「Kinka」は名前なので大文字で書きます。

しかし、「flower」は固有名詞ではないため、大文字は使用しません。

一般的に、次のような表記を見かけることがあります。

Flower または FLOWER

これらが完全に間違いとは言えませんが、一般的に使われる表記ではないことは明らかです。英語の文章の95%以上は小文字で書かれています。

そのため、私たちは常に次のように表記します。

flower
