Happy Valley was first published in 2012 in time for the 2013 academic year, 12 years ago.
In that time it has been a long-time best-seller on sale in 70 countries and voted by children in Japan as more popular than Thomas and Friends!
Happy Valley has helped hundreds of thousands of very young learners learn English.
We’re so proud of Happy Valley and incredibly grateful to all of our users all over the world across all these years.
In this series of short newsletters over 12 weeks, we would like to remind you why we think Happy Valley is great, and why so many of you seem to agree.

We will look at teacher support in detail later, but Happy Valley is really easy to teach:

How many things do little ones need to learn for phonics to be useful?
The alphabet has 26 letters. So, 26?
Add lower case and upper case and the alphabet letters have 52 shapes. So, 52?
Add letter names and one sound per letter, that’s another 52. So, 104?
The letters can make 44 sounds, from 108 phonics skills for reading. (UK National Literacy Strategy)
So, 104 + 44 + 108? 256!!!!????
THATS A LOT!!!
BUT…
95% of written English is lower case.
Letter names are generally used only when asking how to spell, or making a list.
Our learners start at age 3. Even 26 things is a lot to learn.
So, let’s keep it simple and have fun.
Happy Valley uses the popular Phonanimals characters to teach phonics.
There are 26 lovable characters, each with a name, a shape (a letter or grapheme), a sound (phoneme) and a gesture (multi-sensory learning).
We only teach lower case, but present upper case in context for sight reading proper nouns.

Very soon our little ones can match character to name, gesture, phoneme and grapheme, and this leads to decoding and reading. And it lasts for years. We have seen elementary kids using Phonanimals gestures to decode years later.

Use this video to warm students up for phonics. Alternate with Kinka’s gestures video. Sing, gesture, and then play a sound-matching game using objects and Phonanimals Flashcards. Use a big screen projector and Happy Valley Digital.
At Home Tip
After learning Kinka’s gestures, use this video to strengthen sound-name connections. Play a fun object-sound matching game with your child using the Phonanimals poster. Use Happy Valley Digital on a tablet or other device.
