This chant from Happy Valley Student Book 3, Unit 5, introduces various playground equipment which children often find at the park or on the playground. After Storytime, do the chant and then do it again with gestures. This is also a unit to introduce the prepositions in, on and under. Sing that song using hand gestures, and then use the target language and puppets to role play. In my classroom, I set up a “playground” using a chair for the swings, two chairs for the seesaw, a box for the sandbox, a table for the jungle gym and bars, and a folding table with one set of legs up for the slide. Then, students put the puppets or flashcards in, on or under the equipment. You could use the teacher or student flashcards instead of making the playground with furniture, too, by arranging them like in the Storytime picture. Remember, the students will revisit prepositions in Unit 9, so this is a good chance to become familiar with them as the concept can be challenging. If you are using Happy Valley Phonics Book 4, your students are already getting more preposition practice there, too, so just keep encouraging them and giving them opportunities to hear and use the language.

Do the chant and then do it again with gestures. The best thing to do is head to the park after. Identify the different equipment you see and talk to your child about which one they want to use first. When they are ready to use different equipment, talk about which one. Ask Seesaw? and your child can respond in the affirmative, Yes. Seesaw! Or, you could ask What do you want to use? so your child can answer Seesaw!
